In general, pu sports floor mats are usually made of three materials: ethylene; EVA; polyethylene or polyurethane; or a combination of these materials. But do you know the difference between these materials? How do we change our choice?

What is EVA material?

EVA material, also known as ethylene vinyl acetate, is an elasticized closed cell foam with rubbery softness and flexibility. The EVA floor mat is very shiny and resistant to UV radiation, and the floor mat is not resistant to cracking.

Although EVA foam does not contain any rubber, it is often called expanded rubber or foam rubber. EVA foam is known for its shock absorption properties and buoyancy.

Due to these characteristics, the EVA material floor mat is the best choice for sports because it absorbs the impact of falling and is easy to clean and disinfect.EVA material tiles are popular solutions for martial arts facilities, children's play areas, basements, trade shows and more.

As a closed cell foam, the EVA material is stronger than the open cell foam and allows for subtle movement while standing on it without much risk of rolling the ankle. This quality also makes it an anti-fatigue flooring material.

PE foam floor mat

The material used for PE floor mats is called polyethylene. This material waxy feels strong and has high impact absorption, which means it can absorb a lot of energy before breaking. It is also malleable, meaning it is easily deformed under tensile stress.

When used as a foam floor or matting material, PE is typically crosslinked to form a fine closed cell foam that is unaffected by mold, mold, decay and bacteria and provides a strong material with excellent strength and shock absorption.

The polyethylene foam pad is very hard and helps to quickly rebound to its original shape when stretched or crushed, making it more elastic than other foams. Moreover, closed cell foam is also a good insulator.

This material is generally used in thicker floor mats because it is much lighter than other floor materials of the same volume. The foam itself is not an ideal finished product because its surface is easily punctured or scratched, so the surface of the floor mat is usually wrapped with vinyl.

As usual, cheerleaders, gymnastics or fighting floor mats basically use PE foam.

PU foam floor mat

PU foam floor mats use open-celled foam polyurethane, which is known for providing extreme cushioning. When the air flows through the foam, it gives the foam a softer surface.

Polyurethane foam is superior to other foams in terms of energy absorption, but lacks stability. This foam is used to design mats for high impact landings, such as crash pads due to their extensive energy distribution.

The same features make it ideal for absorbing shock and distributing energy, which makes it less suitable for walking, running or jumping because it simply crushes and collapses under the foot instead of bounce or provide resistance.

You often find this foam in landing pads or fluffy mats because they help to drop a bite from falling or falling on your body rather than popping it from your feet or hands. Like PE foam, PU foam is not suitable for use alone, and it needs to be wrapped with another durable material, such as the manufacturer's vinyl.

Therefore, when choosing a sports foam floor mat, it is important to remember that you need to know the resilience, firmness or elasticity, and whether it is simple to clean and disinfect.
